Bordering on Blasphemy

Some alternate versions of some classic songs…I don’t remember exactly how this all came to be but here it is…Thanks to Brian Wurzell for his BGV’s  and Iphone keyboard on Your Grace. Jason Williams on BGV’s and ghetto shaker for Break Free.

We love you Matt Maher and Hillsong. Thanks for all the music you create…it’s much better than this.

All I Need is You-Live

All I Need is You-Live from Ryan Axtell on Vimeo.

This is a tweaked version Jason Williams and I created of this incredible Hillsong tune…with an Album Leaf inspired drumbeat. To simulate a Rhodes type sound I have my tele on the center pickup selection running through a Jeckyl and Hyde Overdrive with the Cry Baby Wah cocked all the way down. I switch to the bridge pickup for the lead line at the end.

Bruce Springsteen's Superbowl Antics

So, living in the Az, I was obviously ecstatic and energized when the Larry Fitzgerald scored the Cardinals last touchdown and a SB ring was almost in our future. How could it get any better than that moment? But the truth of it is Bruce Springsteen’s acrobatics trumped all plays by both teams. What a circus.

The Boss

I thought I was watching The Who on the Ed Sullivan Show or a James Brown concert by the way The Boss moved.  The Telecaster Toss (almost dropped by the roadie). Phallic Mic-stand Kneel. Crotch- Cam Slide. Piano Stand. Pirate Side-Kick Guy in a bandanna yelling “It’s Boss Time” and doing back-to-back-sharing-the-lead-singers-mic-harmonies.

Now I’m not knocking Springsteen. He’s had a great career full of songs that many people love to sing while driving trucks or mining things. He has done very well for himself, but I guess the pressure to out-perform wardrobe malfunctions pushes you to do things abnormal. Keep on truckin’ Bruce…and bring a cup next time.

Favorite Albums

So, as many of you may or may not know…Steely Dan is my favorite band. Always has been. Always will. Why, you might ask? Well, for the following reasons:

Steely Dan-The dirtiest musicians ever.

Naked Lunch- A unique fusion of Jazz, Rock, and Beatnik. (Hello, their name is from the Naked Lunch).

studio-Every session player worth mentioning has recorded with them.

manassas- Donald Fagen plays a keytar…and always seems to have his Rhodes running through an MXR Phase 90.

mk2jnbg-Michael McDonald  sang BGV’s for a while (Check out Peg).

pr_jeffbaxter1- Original Member Jeff Baxter went on to help start the Doobie Brothers (along with McDonald).

1206541-A plethora of made up words and abstract lyrics.

cover_233182482008I would have to say that in my opinion Steely Dan’s Aja album is my favorite album of all time. From the jivin’ bounce of “I Got the News” to the Purdie Shuffle in “Home at Last” there is something for everybody in this album. It has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. It even crosses genres ( Black Cow was sampled and used by Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz in Deja Vu). So, what I want to know is…what is your favorite album and why? Better yet, why is your choice better that mine? Use quantitative  examples, limit 1200 words :) , due by Friday…
